An annual professional holiday for doctors, which is celebrated in Ukraine. The professional holiday of healthcare workers was established in June 1994 by presidential decree on the initiative of workers of healthcare institutions in Ukraine. Celebrated annually on the third Sunday of June.

History of the holiday. The medical profession is one of the oldest and most humane professions. There is no specialty in the world that requires such high responsibility, because the price of a medical error is life. And the professional holiday Doctor's Day is a tribute to and recognition of the enormous role of doctors in the life of the community and every person.

In the USSR, the holiday of doctors, nurses, laboratory assistants and orderlies was celebrated annually on the basis of the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR dated October 1, 1980 “On holidays and memorial days” on the third Sunday in June.

The Doctor's Day holiday in Ukraine was established "... in support of the initiative of workers of healthcare institutions and institutions of Ukraine..." according to the Decree of the President of Ukraine "On Medical Worker's Day" dated June 3, 1994 No. 281/94. This is a day to celebrate the contribution of physicians, who serve our country by caring for their fellow citizens.

Medicine in Ukraine. The first hospitals in Ukraine were founded in the 11th century in Kievan Rus and, as a rule, were shelters at churches. During the 14th-15th centuries, the predecessors of the first real hospitals were built, and medical schools were opened. In 1632, the Kiev Academy was founded - this became a turning point in the history of Ukrainian healthcare. Such famous scientists and doctors as epidemiologist Samoilovich D.S., obstetrician Ambodik-Maksimovich N.M., pediatrician Shotovitsky S.F., anatomist Shamlonsky A.M. and many others came out of the Academy. In the 18th-19th centuries, medical departments were formed at the universities of Kharkov, Kyiv, Lvov and Odessa. During the Crimean War (1854-1856), the first detachment of nurses was trained and sent to Sevastopol. This became the prerequisite for the emergence of the Red Cross organization. In 1886, the first bacteriological station was opened in Odessa. Famous scientists Mechnikov I.I. and Gamaleya N.F. worked here. Ovrazitov V.R. and Strazhenko M.D., who made progress in the field of cardiology, were the founders of the Kyiv school of therapists, academician Filatov V.P. founded the Institute of Eye Physicians in Odessa diseases. A huge contribution to Ukrainian healthcare was made by O. F. Shimanovsky and N. V. Sklifosovsky.

International Doctor's Day. On the third Sunday in June, Doctor's Day is also celebrated in Belarus, Russia, Armenia, Moldova and Kazakhstan.

The date of Medic's Day may vary from country to country. In Cuba, Medic's Day is celebrated as a holiday on December 3 in honor of the birthday of Carlos Juan Finlay (Cuban epidemiologist). In India, Doctor's Day is celebrated on July 1st across India in honor of the legendary physician and second Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhen Chandra Roy. In Iran, Doctor's Day is celebrated on Avicenna's birthday. National Doctors Day in the United States is held every year on March 30th.

Holiday traditions. There are no uniform traditions in celebrating Doctor's Day. As a rule, ceremonial meetings, exhibitions, seminars, lectures about the medical profession and presentations are dedicated to this date.

This day became public knowledge to some extent, because everyone turned to a nurse or doctor for help. One of the unspoken traditions of Doctor's Day is gratitude to healthy patients: every year on this day, doctors' desks are literally buried in flowers. In this article we will try to tell you as much as possible about this professional holiday.

When is Doctor's Day celebrated in Ukraine? every third Sunday in June. In 2017 it falls on June 18th.

Where else are they celebrated? in Russia, Belarus and other countries of the former USSR.

history of the holiday

The history of this holiday goes back to ancient times. A few years before our era, Gaius Pliny Secundus, the great Roman scientist, said: “There is no more useful art than Medicine.” Even then, this phrase emphasized how grateful the ancient Romans were to the people who saved their lives. In our time, the medical profession gained special authority during the USSR. It was then that a holiday was created under the laconic name: “Medical Worker’s Day.”

The date of celebration was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union (October 1, 1980) “On holidays and memorable days.” In independent Ukraine, Medical Worker Day was confirmed by decree of the President of the country. In addition to Ukraine, this day is celebrated on the third Sunday in June in Belarus and Russia.

As you can see, the history of the holiday goes back more than thirty years. And the tradition of its celebration not only does not lose relevance, but every year it becomes more and more popular and open to the public. If in Soviet times this day was celebrated mainly by doctors, now junior medical personnel have also joined them. Moreover, for the last year, congratulations have been received by specialists who have at least some connection to the field of medicine: biologists, chemists, engineers, laboratory assistants, technologists. All those who are involved in the development of drugs and the latest equipment for treatment and diagnostics.

How is Medical Worker's Day celebrated?

As we said above, it is now customary to congratulate not only doctors on this day. And this is completely justified. Yes, the doctor makes the diagnosis and prescribes the treatment. But the success of treatment will depend on how professionally the nurse works: how she monitors the implementation of instructions and takes into account the smallest details. What about the rehabilitation process or the postoperative period? It’s hard to imagine it without the delicate and difficult work of a nurse. That is why this professional holiday is another reason to say a huge thank you to all those who took part in your treatment.

On the eve of the holiday, ceremonial meetings are held in Ukraine. At the state level, the award goes to those who have particularly distinguished themselves in their difficult task. Television concerts and special episodes of popular programs are also often prepared.

Each clinic and hospital must have its own program. The best employees and veterans of the institution also receive awards and bonuses. The holiday most often ends with a corporate party. Moreover, if the weather is whispering, then the groups do not choose cafes and restaurants, or cozy places for picnics. If there are several doctors in the family, then this holiday automatically becomes a family holiday, and it is celebrated by a narrow circle of those closest to you.

On a note! Unfortunately, not every medical worker can relax on his professional holiday: many remain on duty. In this case, you should know about one sign. If you congratulate a nurse or doctor who remains at work, under no circumstances wish them a good day. In the medical community, it is believed that such a wish will “turn around”, and on the contrary, the day will turn out to be difficult.

Doctors who glorified Ukraine throughout the world

  • Nikolay Amosov (1913-2002)

This doctor became the first in the Soviet Union to make a prosthetic mitral heart valve. He wrote more than four hundred scientific papers: some of them were republished in Japan, the USA, Bulgaria and Germany. According to the results of one of the public polls about the great Ukrainians, people called Amosov second after Yaroslav the Wise.

  • Alexander Bogomolets (1881-1946)

This Ukrainian scientist managed to create the first medical research institution in Russia. He also organized the first anti-malaria laboratory in the Soviet Union. And this is not to mention the fact that it was Bogomolets who created a unique serum that accelerates wound healing. During wartime, it brought a lot of benefit in Soviet hospitals. He also thought about a cure for immortality. There is an opinion in history that Stalin was very angry when the scientist died: apparently, the leader hoped to live forever with his help.

  • Vladimir Filatov (1875-1956)

For more than fifty years of his work, this great Ukrainian ophthalmologist performed several thousand operations. He became the first who decided to use the corneas of cadaveric eyes during operations.

  • Alexander Palladin (1885-1972)

Palladin founded the Ukrainian school of biochemists. He actively studied the nervous system, and also became the first in the Soviet Union to begin studying vitamins at the biochemical level. In particular, he created Vikasol, which is used for bleeding, wounds and vitamin deficiency.

  • Daniil Samoilovich (1744-1805)

This amazing doctor became the founder of epidemiology in the Russian Empire. It was he who at the end of the eighteenth century was the leader of the fight against plague epidemics in Odessa, Crimea, Moscow and other large cities. Samoilovich became the first scientist in the world who managed to establish how the plague was actually transmitted. This was a breakthrough after centuries of endless epidemics and deaths.

history of the holiday

On June 16, 2019, doctors will celebrate International Medical Worker Day, which was officially established in 1980 at the initiative of the international organization Doctors Without Borders. Since 1981, the holiday has been officially celebrated not only by healthcare workers in Russia, but also by doctors in Armenia, Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus.

The meaning of the holiday

The importance of people in white coats is invaluable. Throughout their lives, they nobly fulfill their duty towards everyone. But not only doctors and nurses celebrate the international holiday.

All those who are involved in medicine have every right to consider this day theirs. Scientists, chemists, laboratory assistants, biologists, diagnosticians and orderlies, absolutely everyone is directly related to it.

The significance of the holiday, as a purely professional one, goes far beyond, because not a single person can remain indifferent to it. There is no better opportunity to express my sincere love and gratitude to the people who are completely dedicated to their professional duty, restoring their health to millions of people.

Holiday traditions

There are no traditions of the Day of the Medical Worker as such yet. On this day, medical workers congratulate each other in close company. In addition, on this special day, concerts and congratulations are organized for them.

One of the traditions is honoring honored medical employees with awards. Health care workers who have given their strength and knowledge for 20 years or more are recognized separately and awarded one of two titles: “Honored Doctor” or “Honored Health Worker of the Russian Federation.” Since 2013, the “Recognition” award began its existence, which is awarded on this day to highly qualified and dedicated doctors of the Russian Federation.

On this significant day for medicine, students of medical universities are also not forgotten. Parties in clubs and field trips with thematic themes are organized for them. Also, numerous master classes and symposia on various specializations are held throughout Russia. In a narrow circle of clinics, the administration awards cash bonuses to deserving employees.

What date do doctors celebrate?

In 2019, the holiday falls on June 16. Along with Russia, all CIS countries celebrate the holiday. Unlike the Russian Federation, where medicine celebrates its professional holiday every 3rd Sunday in June, in neighboring countries its date needs to be clarified, since it falls on different days. For example, in India it takes place on June 1st. In the USA, this day was renamed and is now called “National Doctors Day”, and it is celebrated on March 30th. In addition, there are specialized holidays. Such as: Dentist Day - February 9, Traumatologist Day - May 20, World Ultrasound Day - October 29.

How to congratulate

On this day, one cannot help but congratulate all the healthcare workers who helped in difficult times, and perhaps even brought many people back to life more than once. You can congratulate doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other medical workers on the website of the medical institution. It is not necessary to present congratulations in person; you can also congratulate and express your personal gratitude over the phone.

There is a category of people to whom we are accustomed to turn for help in the most difficult or controversial moments of our lives. And we are confident that they will provide us with this assistance. We are talking about medical workers. When should Medic's Day be celebrated in 2019? After all, you will probably want to congratulate one of your friends or loved ones who have connected their lives with this difficult, but extremely noble profession.

On October 1, 1980, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR issued a Decree, according to which Medical Worker Day in our country is celebrated annually on the third Sunday of June. This is a professional holiday of people who have dedicated their lives to an extremely difficult and noble cause - preserving the health and lives of others. Any of us may need the help of a doctor at any moment. This can happen at home or while traveling, on the way to work or to the store. Many people have heard of cases where only the accidental presence of a doctor at the scene of an incident helped a person survive in a difficult situation or accident.

But Medic Day is a professional holiday not only for doctors or nurses. Together with them, this day is celebrated by all those people whose profession is in one way or another connected with medicine - biologists, chemists, laboratory assistants, engineers and designers of medical equipment and many, many others. Medic Day in 2019 in our country will be celebrated on June 19.

Profession: physician

Who are healthcare professionals? Well, it would seem that the answer to this question is clear - people whose profession is related to medicine, that is, diagnosing, curing and preventing all kinds of diseases that so poison our lives. This applies to all areas of health – physical, mental and social. The great ancient Greek philosopher Socrates called the medical profession one of the three that a person receives from the gods. The other two are a judge and a teacher. The thing is that in order to become a medical worker, to devote your life to this profession, you must have not only a desire, but also a real calling. Random people in medicine can do much more harm than good. Fortunately, they usually don’t linger here.

If an ordinary person saves someone's life, he becomes a hero - the press writes about him, people thank him and even present him for an award. Doctors and other medical workers save lives every day - for them it is an ordinary, routine job and even a little boring. Medic Day 2019 is another reason to say thank you to them. Of course, a lot has changed since the times of Socrates and Avicenna - today's doctors are armed with all modern technologies, they have precision equipment and highly effective medications. And yet, a medical error is very expensive, because its price is a person’s health or life. Therefore, to become a doctor you have to study a lot, and then constantly improve your qualifications, being interested in all the new products in the field of healthcare.

Another feature that doctors have to deal with these days is that the bulk of their patients suffer from chronic rather than acute diseases. They often have to be dealt with not with the help of medications, but with the help of the patient’s own diet, proper daily routine and healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, chronic disease is almost impossible to completely cure. And a physician needs to be not only a good specialist in his field, but also take on the responsibilities of a psychologist, supporting the patient in his daily struggle with the disease, explaining to him and his loved ones the essence of the prescriptions being carried out and the importance of carefully following them.

Who are called doctors?

A medical worker or physician is a collective name for several professions. All of them are divided into medical workers of higher, middle and lower levels.

The highest level includes physicians who have graduated from higher educational institutions and received appropriate education and practice after university. For the most part, these are doctors who have undergone special training and received higher education in specialized specialties: therapist, pediatrician, neurologist, surgeon, ophthalmologist, dentist, and so on.

Middle-level medical professionals include nurses, paramedics, dental technicians, midwives, and x-ray technicians. Middle-level doctors receive secondary specialized education in relevant educational institutions. Their responsibilities include caring for patients, performing procedures prescribed by doctors, and assisting senior medical staff.

Finally, it is customary to include nurse aides, junior nurses and housekeepers as junior doctors or junior medical personnel. They are responsible for assisting mid-level doctors, transporting patients, issuing the necessary equipment and bedding, cleaning premises, and so on.

Representatives of all these professions will celebrate Medic Day in 2019.

What personal qualities should a physician have?

To become a good doctor and devote your whole life to serving people, you need to have certain personal qualities. First of all, such as intuition, ability to communicate, patience, responsiveness, good memory, attention to other people's pain and other people's needs, responsibility, observation, speed of reaction, resistance to stress and emotional stability. In addition, each medical specialty also has its own specific requirements. For example, a surgeon needs the ability to make small, precise movements, as well as good visual-spatial memory.

Unfortunately, in our country, in public clinics, even highly qualified doctors and other medical specialists cannot boast of high salaries. In private clinics, things are somewhat better, but not all patients can afford to go to a private clinic. Therefore, for example, the work of doctors in small rural hospitals often requires from them not only complete dedication, but also outright enthusiasm. Such doctors are truly the heroes of our days.
