You will need

  • - equipment and a set of jewelry tools;
  • - precious and non-ferrous metals;
  • - precious and semi-precious stones.

Instructions

Set up your own jewelry workshop, including a workplace and utility room. Provide supply and exhaust ventilation in the workshop to remove harmful fumes and dust released during melting, pickling and grinding of material.

Purchase the necessary equipment. You will need a workbench, a jewelry burner, a movable lamp, a drill, a set of baths, and a box with compartments for storing stones and precious metals. Equip the room with a dust collector. Place a washbasin with a sump in the utility room to collect metal particles.

Prepare the tools necessary for the work: files of various profiles, needle files for filing metal, tweezers, pliers, wire cutters, scissors for working with metal, a jigsaw, hammers, a miniature anvil. You will also need plates and punches for forming parts and a drawing board. Processing products using a drill will require a set of drills, cutters and abrasive wheels.

To carry out measurements, stock up on tabletop equipment with weights, calipers, micrometer, and metal ruler. As you master product manufacturing techniques, you will likely need additional tools and accessories.

Stock up on the amount of precious and non-ferrous metals and stones necessary to begin work. Most often, silver, platinum, palladium and their alloys are used in jewelry.

Determine for yourself the types and types of jewelry you intend to make. There are an infinite number of them, but not every product can be made in an ordinary workshop. The most suitable options that an individual craftsman can handle would be rings, earrings, brooches, pendants, medallions, and some types of chains (with simple weaving).

Start making jewelry with preparatory operations, including the preparation of alloys and individual parts of the future product. These include melting, forging, drawing, stamping, pattern casting and so on.

Use mechanical processing of the material, which is mostly done manually. To do this, transfer the drawing of the future product onto the workpiece, cut it along the markings or saw off the part with a jigsaw. Also use drilling and filing of the future product to give it the required shape.

After completing the work of forming the contours of the product, proceed to the final stage of making jewelry: soldering, installation of movable joints, scraping.

Vladimir Markin has been involved in jewelry since 1997. He worked in different companies, and four years ago he founded his own brand and opened a workshop at Red October. Now his team of eight people makes things to order and releases two collections a year. The brand is known for jewelry with unusual designs: in the form of bridges, made of wood with stones, in the form of stationery and mechanical (for example, there is a ring in which diamonds can be hidden at the touch of a button). The price for items from the collections starts from 15 thousand rubles; custom-made jewelry costs from 100 thousand rubles to several tens of thousands of dollars. Here's how they're made.

1. If ideas for collections come spontaneously, then the process of creating custom jewelry begins with communication with the client. According to Vladimir Markin, customers often do not know what kind of thing they want, and they have to find out who it is intended for and what the person likes. “We try to find out as much information as possible from the client, which will give rise to creativity, so that he will be interested and we will be pleased,” says Markin.

2. For example, these cufflinks were ordered by a man who used to be in the oil business, and now works on Internet projects - black diamonds are hidden behind the chip-like plates.

3. The artist draws a sketch of each decoration by hand. After the design is approved by the customer, production begins.

6. A 3D model is built based on the sketch. With its help, a prototype of the decoration is printed on a printer, which is needed to make the mold of the future product.

7. There is no foundry in the workshop - the contractor does the casting. Gold blanks come to the workshop ready-made.

16. Stones are purchased all over the world - sometimes they are selected for a specific decoration, sometimes the product is designed to match the existing material. The workshop works with different stones, but diamonds are most often used.

19. Setting stones on a snail-shaped pendant. There must be about 400 sapphires on it. Using various screws, the employee secures the stones - she will spend about a day on this.

20. During the process of setting stones, the product is periodically cleaned with a stream of hot steam.

As a child, I dreamed of a nice gold chain, or rather a chain! I wanted to look something like this:

Then, in the dashing 90s, it seemed a symbol of success!

But today it looks funny. Ridiculous gold chains remained in jokes about the new Russians, which few people understand today. But gold jewelry has not disappeared anywhere. They just make them more modest now.

Do you know how they are made? Modern technologies have greatly changed jewelry production. I recently visited one of the largest jewelry production facilities in Russia. It is located in Moscow, and the craftsmen working there create more than 30 thousand jewelry. If you want to know what heights the jewelry industry has reached, then go to the cat, I’ll tell you everything and show you.

We started our tour of the factory with the chain knitting production. I was told that the best equipment was installed here, which could weave hundreds of different types of chains.

First of all, the plant’s employees produce alloys from which chains will then be woven. In addition to gold, silver, copper and zinc are added to the alloys. The main thing here is to maintain the correct proportion. The grade, color and strength of the chains will ultimately depend on it. Therefore, when producing alloys, metals are mixed with an accuracy of 0.01 grams. The finished alloy is poured into water, and it hardens in the form of many small granules. Then gold rods 5 millimeters in diameter are cast from these granules. They are sent to rolling machines and after processing they are turned into coils of gold wire.

The wire is loaded into automatic machines, which weave chains from them according to specified settings. There are more than 20 basic types of weaving, but there are still a huge number of different variations. There are also unique ones, that is, those that have no analogues in the world; they are woven exclusively at a Russian factory. In total there are more than 130 chain knitting machines. All of them are made in Italy, and today they are the best in the world.

After the weaving stage, the chains are pulled through special machines. All links are sealed in them under the influence of temperature. To check the quality of soldering, the chains are tested for strength. And after testing, they are sent for diamond cutting.

The chains are wound on a steel drum, the temperature of which is -12 degrees. Sub-zero temperatures are needed for the chains to freeze and secure well.

The machine operator selects a program, and the diamond cutters process the chains in accordance with this program. As a result, they acquire a smooth, shiny surface.

Then the processed chains are sent for cutting. This is done manually. Transition elements and locks are also manually put on the resulting chains and bracelets. After assembly, finished products are marked with the manufacturer's stamp.

Then they undergo testing and marking operations at the State Assay Supervision Inspectorate for Moscow and the Moscow Region. Each product is checked for gold content, after which it is marked with a corresponding stamp - a sample. After this, the products can be prepared for sale: they are cleaned with ultrasound, dried, checked, a tag is attached to them, packaged and sent to stores.

The plant also has a large jewelry production facility. Every month more than 15 thousand jewelry items are created here: all kinds of rings, earrings, pendants and pendants. All of them are produced with a large share of manual labor.

The creation of any piece of jewelry begins with a sketch. The production employs professional designers and artists who create detailed designs for future products. Based on these projects, craftsmen make prototypes, or master models. Previously, master models were made by hand, but here a 3D printer is used for these purposes. The printer creates a wax prototype of the jewelry, and then a master model is cast from silver in a single copy.

The master model is used to create rubber molds. They are manufactured in a special apparatus under the influence of temperature and pressure. The output is a rectangular piece of rubber with a silver master model inside. This piece is cut in half, the silver is removed from it, and the rubber mold is ready.

But it will not be possible to pour molten gold into a rubber mold, so the craftsmen move on to the next stage - creating plaster molds. To do this, molten wax is injected under pressure into a rubber mold. Since the rubber mold is reusable, in this way it is possible to create many identical wax models of the product. Wax models are mounted on a special wax stand in the shape of a herringbone.

Then this Christmas tree is immersed in a container and filled with plaster. The plaster mold is sent into an oven at 650 degrees. The wax melts and flows out, and the mold becomes empty. Now you can pour gold into it.

Products cast in gold are sent for assembly and polishing. First, they are polished in drums with different fillers: these can be pieces of plastic or walnut shells. After processing in such drums, the products undergo additional manual polishing on a grinding wheel.

The next stage is soldering. It uses a hydrogen torch. Unlike gas torches, hydrogen torches allow you to make soldering much more accurately and do not oxidize the gold.

And the last stage of production is the installation of stones. After this, the jewelry, just like chains and bracelets, is sent to the Assay Office, cleaned, checked, packaged and sent to stores.

They also showed me how wedding rings are made. They are made from gold tubes of different diameters, depending on the size of the future rings. These tubes are inserted into special machines, processed and cut into rings. Then, just like other products, they are sent for revision to master jewelers.

All products produced at this plant end up in a network of jewelry stores. Remember my post when you visit them for an engagement ring for the bride or a gift for your wife)

Buying jewelry can be quite expensive, it is much cheaper to make your own jewelry especially for those who like to do things with their own hands. You can make your own jewelry that exactly suits your style and taste. Find inspiration by visiting jewelry stores or look online on social platforms, visual organization websites, or jewelry store websites.

3 Materials for making jewelry

Depending on what kind of decorations you plan to make, you will likely need some basic tools to complete your project. [ Some basic tools for beginners to consider:

  • Various pliers - round nose pliers, chain nose pliers, chain nose pliers, curved pliers and nylon pliers
  • Metal ruler that measures both centimeters and inches
  • Wire cutters
  • Wire or wire to create the base of jewelry
  • Peg boards for wire bending

4 Buying handmade jewelry

Handmade jewelry can be made from many different types of supplies, but there are a few basic supplies that are used for most handmade jewelry. Jewelry making kits can provide you with general or project materials, but if you plan to start making jewelry without using a kit, you will need to purchase some materials on your own.

Need to buy:

  • Beads
  • Jewelry wire in general sizes (18, 20 and 22); 20 is better for beginners
  • Studs for earrings
  • Locks and closures
  • Jump rings

5 Familiarize yourself with basic jewelry measurements

To determine how big or small you want your jewelry piece to be, check out some basic jewelry measurements. There are common standard sizes for necklaces and bracelets (depending on whether the jewelry is for men or women) and what specific sizes you want to achieve.
For example, different styles of necklaces have a certain length.

Chokers are about 38 cm long, princess style necklaces are about 45 cm long, and rope necklaces are about 86 cm long or more.
Necklaces that fall just below the collar bone tend to measure around 17 inches for women and around 50 cm for men.

The total length of the bracelets is about 18 cm for women and 25 cm for men.

6 Learn basic jewelry making skills and techniques

To begin the process of making your own jewelry, you must learn some basic skills and techniques to successfully complete your project. Common skills and techniques to learn include making jump rings, cutting wire, wiring, threading and using jigs and pegs, etc.
To learn these different techniques, you can read books on jewelry, look for tutorials, and take jewelry-making workshops.
Search the Internet for instructions on how to make the specific earrings, bracelet, ring or other types of jewelry you want to try.

7 Gather the necessary materials

Once you have the jewelry project you want to make selected, gather all the necessary materials. Again, your materials can come from a jewelry making kit, or you can research the style of jewelry, determine the level of difficulty, and then purchase the materials needed yourself.
For example, to start creating charm earrings, you first need to choose the materials you want to use. The project you want to create can be found on the Internet, in craft stores or jewelry stores. Then you need to select your earring results, which are the parts of the earring.
When you are ready to start making your jewelry, proceed to the instructions you purchased on how to make the jewelry item.

8 Practice technique before doing work with expensive materials

As mentioned earlier, for wire jewelry, practice wire is a good idea to practice and perfect your jewelry making skills before moving on to bending and cutting more expensive wire. This way, you can hone your skill with more repetitions, so your final product will be better.
No matter what kind of jewelry material you use, always try to practice this technique first before using your real precious jewelry materials.
Thin copper wire is always a good choice for practical applications.

Part 2 making earrings

1 Try making earrings from Swarovski crystals

These earrings are quite simple to make and only require two crystals for your purposes, two jump rings and two earring leads. You will also need a set of pliers to bend the jewelry in the right places.

2 Add crystals to rings

Use your pliers to flip and open the two rings. Feed the crystals onto the ring through the holes.Make sure that if the crystals have a clear front and back side, the front side will be shown in front once you close the ring and put on the earring. If not, you can always open the ring again and rotate the crystal onto the ring.

3 Add the found earrings to the rings

Once the crystals are on the jump rings, slide the earrings off the ring. Use pliers to close and secure the rings.
This earring project can take less than five minutes and at the end you have a unique pair of beautiful earrings.

Part 3 making a bracelet

1 Try making a bracelet with beads

A simple beaded bracelet is a great way to start making handmade bracelets. For this bracelet you will need beads of your choice:

beading kit

wire cutters

crimp beads

rings

closing clasp

2 Add beads to the bracelet.

Start by placing the beads on the wire to create your DIY jewelry while still attached to the spool. Keeping the wires attached to the reel allows you to change the length of the bracelet depending on your purposes.

3 Determine the length of the bracelets

Figure out how much length you need for the clasp and ring to be added to your final product bracelet, take this into account and remove some beads equivalent to that length.

4 Add a ring to the end of your bracelet

Add a crimp ball and ring to the end of your bracelet. Give yourself some space at the end of the wire. Take the end of the wire tag and thread it back through the end ball.

5 Attach the bracelet

Continue winding the wire through the rest of the beads until the jump ring is pulled against the wire. Use your crimping pliers to clamp the crimp washer and secure the crimp washer. You can also trim off the excess wire near the crimp ball so you don't get jittery. Repeat this process on the other side of the bracelet. Add a clasp to the end of the bracelet. Add a clasp to one of the end jump rings, using pliers to twist and open the jump ring, then feed the clasp onto the ring. Close the jump ring and connect the bracelet.
This same technique can be used with a long wire and a lot of beads to make a simple necklace.

DIY jewelry, where to start?

There is probably no woman who does not dream of being special and unique. You can create your own individual style and add a twist to any standard wardrobe with the help of handmade jewelry. Handmade jewelry has always been valued, and over the last few years it has been a fashion trend and not without reason, because it carries the author’s design and the warmth of the hands.

Learning how to create jewelry is not at all difficult; this fascinating process provides enormous scope for self-expression and creativity. Having mastered the technique jewelry making, you will be able to create a designer accessory, be it a necklace, earrings or bracelet, to go with any outfit, not only for yourself, but also for your loved ones. Don’t forget about the benefits of such a hobby: ready-made sets of jewelry made from natural stones are quite expensive; it’s much more profitable to make them yourself, choosing materials and designs to your liking.

Jewelry can be created using a wide variety of techniques: modeling (polymer clay, ceramics), lampwork (melting glass beads), Wire work (working with wire and metal), they can be made from textiles, leather, beads, epoxy resin and other materials. But all these techniques require certain knowledge and experience. The easiest way is to create a decoration from ready-made elements; this is accessible to everyone, even if you have never held pliers in your hands.

What do you need to start making jewelry? In addition to a little patience and a little more time, you will also need materials. They must be of high quality and specialized.

Currently, there is a huge selection of modern and interesting materials to realize any jewelry fantasy.

Of course, you can take old beads lying around at home and string them on a fishing line, securing the entire structure with a knot, but it is unlikely that such a “decoration” will last you long and will more likely resemble a craft rather than an original work.

The choice of elements should be taken carefully so as not to get confused with their impressive assortment, use these simple tips

When choosing beads, take into account their color combinations with each other, and also calculate the required number based on the length of the product.

First you need to decide on the most important component of the future decoration - beads. They can be of completely different shapes, sizes, made of natural stones, glass, acrylic, faceted, smooth, etc. When choosing beads, take into account their color combinations with each other, and also calculate the required number based on the length of the product.

Decide on the basis of the decoration. Basically, when creating bijou, two types of assembly are used: professional jewelry cable (it is thin, but very strong and flexible) (f.6), or assembly on pins and pins(more labor-intensive method).

If the beads used are too heavy, you can use wire.

Once the beads have been selected, you can proceed to selecting metal fittings. It comes in silver, bronze and copper shades. Silver fittings are suitable for classic jewelry; bronze and copper shades are perfect for creating jewelry in ethnic and vintage styles. With the help of various metal elements, jewelry looks more interesting and rich. Such elements include caps for beads, rondels, spacer beads, connectors(with their help you can make multi-row beads and bracelets), frames for beads.

The central element of a necklace always looks interesting - a pendant; it can be one, or several at once; for attaching the pendants you will need bails and holders.

Locks come in various options: toggle, carabiner lock, hook, magnetic lock, etc. The most convenient toggle lock, but you should keep in mind that a product with such a lock will have a fixed length, and with the help carabiner lock and the length of the extending chain can be slightly changed. Magnetic clasps look stylish and neat, but are only suitable for light jewelry; if heavy, they can come unfastened, and this is completely uncomfortable.
