Decorating your home for the holidays is not an easy task, but nothing is easier if you figure out how to make a paper snowflake - this decor looks attractive and has been relevant for many years. Moreover, you can make not just ordinary flat decorations, but also voluminous ones. By the way, they can be used in interior decoration, a festive table, or even decorate a Christmas tree with them.

Classic paper version

Traditional garlands from paper leaves have been cut out for several generations and are the most popular type of decoration. It's best to get the whole family together and do this activity - this way you can have a good time and make snowflakes with your own hands - with different designs.

Traditional decorations are made by folding a sheet of paper six times - you can see patterns of snowflakes. However, if you want to get a more sophisticated decor, you should not stop at the classic options; you can quite easily fold the sheet any number of times - this way the snowflakes for the New Year will turn out to be varied.

What you need to make paper snowflakes yourself:

  • paper - simple office white paper is suitable, as well as an album for children's creativity. Particularly dense varieties like watercolor ones should not be taken - such a blank will not be very easy to bend and cut.
  • breadboard knife and stationery scissors - directly for cutting. If you plan to make paper snowflakes with your children, make sure they have scissors with rounded ends.
  • pencil and eraser - for applying markings and patterns to the workpiece.

Several ways to create

How to make a beautiful snowflake out of paper if you have never done it before? You can go through trial and error if you have enough time and enthusiasm. Fold the sheet in any way convenient for you, and then pick up scissors or a stationery knife.

This video shows 3 ways to fold paper to cut out snowflakes:

draw the pattern and cut it out correctly:

If you don't mind bends, you can use nail scissors. First of all, you need to give your future snowflake a beautiful edge - you can simply cut it with a smooth line, cut out ice crystals or even a few teeth. It all depends on your imagination.

Then you need to cut through the main decorative elements - they can be abstract or quite logical - for example, a pattern with herringbones looks beautiful. After you cut out the main elements, add small ones - it is more convenient to do them with a stationery knife (for this you can place the workpiece on a special mat for cutting paper or on a pile of old newspapers or magazines - this will help protect the table).

Then the workpiece needs to be smoothed. A few attempts will help you get your bearings and decide on a design.

If you don’t understand how to fold paper, then you can use the simplest method - fold the paper sheet in half, then one more time - a rhombus will come out. Fold it again to form a triangle - the corner where the most folds will be the central part, and the free sides will be the edge. You can look at addition schemes to obtain elements with any number of rays.

A colored paper snowflake looks impressive - especially if it double-sided colored paper with glitter effect. By the way, the finished snowflake can be decorated with decorative glue and glitter.

Try folding paper for a snowflake according to one of the patterns and cutting out something at your discretion, and if you don’t like the result, you can always print out a beautiful pattern and make snowflakes with your own hands from paper or a blank.

More volume

If you want to understand how to make a three-dimensional snowflake out of paper, then first you need to define the terms. Three-dimensional can be either an ordinary shape, which is folded after cutting and fixed in such a way that it turns out to be corrugated, or a structure that is made from several elements.

The most impressive look is the beautiful huge snowflakes (larger in size than an A4 sheet), which are assembled from several fragments. Making a large snowflake without an assembly diagram is very difficult; you need to have good spatial thinking. To understand how to make each element and understand how a three-dimensional structure is obtained from it, it is better to watch a short and understandable master class.

The best DIY voluminous snowflakes made from foil and paper come when you follow inspiration and at the same time look at the working assembly diagram.

Do you want to figure out how to cut snowflakes out of paper with an unusual design in the form of Einstein's head or with symbols from Game of Thrones? You will need snowflake templates to cut out - follow the instructions and you will get exactly the same result as in the image.

If you are confident in your own abilities, then you can try to draw your own stencils for cutting - first we fold the sheet the required number of times, then on one side we make a drawing of what should end up and cut it out.

These decorative elements can be used to decorate an apartment or a New Year tree, and they can also be used at a party - of course, if it is in the spirit of a popular fandom. However, you can go the other way and not print out the finished design, but study a step-by-step master class and figure out how a folded triangle of paper turns into familiar symbols and faces.

Try cutting paper snowflakes using the cutting templates.

Unusual voluminous paper snowflakes can be made in another way - for example, using the quilling technique. You will need strips from which you will twist spirals and glue them together.

Use a ready-made idea with a photo or video, or come up with something of your own. To make voluminous beautiful snowflakes from colored paper with your own hands, watch the step-by-step lessons and you will learn how to make unusual snowflakes from paper and colored foil by looking at the cutting diagrams.

However, if you like to cut and have a good knife for cutting out paper, then you can make fan snowflakes with your own hands. This is a complex structure with an interesting design, which is assembled from several layers - like a children's pyramid. Each layer consists of sheets of paper folded like a fan, on which fancy patterns are cut out.

Here's a large, voluminous snowflake you can make from two sheets of paper folded like a fan:

The paper fan made in this way is glued with three or four similar fans - this will be the largest circle. By the way, you can make it quite dense, without a large number of openwork elements, or take sheets of blue or cyan color for production - subsequent layers will show through and the product will actually glow with blue light.

The next paper circle is also made from fans, but of a smaller size; you can change the depth of the fold and choose an interesting pattern. This is how several layers are made step by step - you shouldn’t do too much, 3-6 layers will be enough.

To make unique volumetric ones with your own hands, try using the quilling or origami technique in combination with the fan technique.

To assemble a snow globe, you will need a drawing - you can print it out or come up with it yourself based on the master class. All that is required for this product is to figure out how many elements you will assemble your ball from, and how you will fasten the elements together (the easiest way is to glue them), and then prepare a template for one such element.

Now you know how to cut out New Year's snowflakes and maybe even in the hottest summer you can bring a little winter decoration and comfort to your home.

Good day everyone!

The most wonderful holiday is approaching - New Year. Many prepare for it already a month in advance. Would you say something is too early? However, it is never too early to purchase jewelry, quite the contrary. Especially if you decide to make some decorations with your own hands, for example. What interesting things can you do? First of all, these are, of course, snowflakes. What do we make them from? From paper.

In this article we will try to make paper snowflakes, as well.

Making snowflakes out of paper is quite simple. All you need is paper and scissors. Take the paper and fold it several times to form a triangle. Like this:

All that remains now is to cut out the patterns. Draw the desired pattern along the edges of the triangle and cut it out. After this, we unfold the paper and get a beautiful patterned snowflake.

Depending on what pattern you draw, the snowflake will be like that. There is no limit to imagination here. For example, you can cut out a snowflake like this:

Or like this:

In addition to ordinary snowflakes, you can make three-dimensional ones. Here the manufacturing scheme is slightly different.

If we are making a six-ray snowflake, we will need six sheets of paper, if we are making an eight-ray snowflake, we will need eight, etc. On each sheet of paper, cut out a square measuring 10x10 cm or more. The larger the size of the sides of the square of the workpiece, the correspondingly larger the snowflake itself will be. Now, at some distance from each other, draw parallel lines to make several squares inside a sheet of paper. Approximately as in the diagram.

The next step is to take scissors and make cuts along the drawn lines (red). We don’t cut it out, but just make an incision so that these squares are secured at two opposite corners.

Next, take the central square (shown with an arrow in the figure) and roll its edges into a tube, towards the center. Glue the ends together. Then we turn the sheet over and on the reverse side we do the same operation with another strip. Then we turn it over again and roll the tube, and so on as many times as you drew squares.

We make all other preparations in the same way. After this, we fasten them to each other and, as a result, we get a snowflake.

Cut out paper snowflakes using printable templates

You can cut out snowflakes not only by folding paper. You can select special templates, print them, and then cut out your craft using them.

Another fairly simple option.

And this snowflake template is a little more complicated.

If you are folding a sheet of paper, but have no idea what design to draw to make a beautiful pattern, then here are a few templates.

Or, for example, like this.

This template is a little complicated, but the result is a beautiful snowflake.

There are several templates at once, some of them are simple, some are somewhat more complex. However, patience and perseverance will help you create a masterpiece. And, of course, children, how to cut out snowflakes without them.

Origami is the making of paper crafts without cutting. Snowflakes can also be made using this technique. Here are some diagrams.

This option uses scissors, but only to make cuts.

You can make the following snowflake from paper:

To do this, use the following scheme:

In this option, you make a snowflake from prepared modules.

Then we assemble the snowflake itself from them.

These were all snowflakes, let's say, in 2-D format. But voluminous snowflakes are also popular.

How to make voluminous paper snowflakes with your own hands step-by-step video master class

Volumetric snowflakes, of course, look more beautiful and original. And if you make them large, they will look quite impressive.

And here, watch a video that clearly explains how to make such a snowflake:

And also in our new article!

Making snowflakes from paper strips with your own hands

Volumetric snowflakes can be made using colored strips of paper. For example, you could do something like this:

To do this, take colored paper (the colors can be any you choose). Cut strips 29 cm long and 0.5 cm wide. Cut approximately 20 strips.

Now we put stripes in the form of a cross, 4-5 pieces each, alternating colors. We put them intertwined with each other.

First, we glue the outermost strips together (they are yellow in the picture) so we should get something like an auto-detachment on a map.

Glue the remaining strips (white in the picture) to the corners of the opposite yellow petals. As a result, we get a snowflake, as in the example at the very beginning of the description.

An easy way to make 3D snowflakes step by step

Volumetric or 3-D snowflakes look a little better than simple ones. Let's try to make one like this.

Take a square piece of paper and fold it several times until you get a triangle. You need to make six such triangles. And they should all be the same. Now, on each triangle we draw parallel lines at a distance of approximately 1 cm. The number of such lines depends on the size of the triangle and there can be three or more. Now we cut along these strips from one edge to the other, but, of course, not to the very end.

We unfold the triangle back into a square and fold and glue its central part.

We turn the square over to the other side and glue the next cut square in the same way.

Flip and repeat. And so on until we glue all the cut strips together. A similar procedure is carried out with all workpieces. After this, we first fasten three figures together, then the remaining three.

As a result, we get a snowflake like this.

or like this.

Its size depends on the size of the paper. This craft requires a little more time and more painstaking work compared to simple snowflakes. But the result is worth it.

Master class on snowflakes in quilling style for beginners (video)

Quilling is a technique for making crafts from paper that is cut into strips and rolled. After which all these twisted blanks are connected and we get the intended craft. For example, these wonderful snowflakes.

How to make snowflakes using the quilling technique, watch this video

So, we looked at various ways to create New Year's snowflakes. Choose, craft and decorate your homes. Good luck!

To create a festive atmosphere, each of us tries to decorate our home and workplace for the New Year. Snowflakes are perhaps the most common decoration. They can be cut out of paper, napkins or even newspaper, and have a variety of shapes and colors. They are glued to windows, walls, and hung from the ceiling by threads. You can make a stunningly beautiful New Year's garland from several snowflakes fastened together.

If you want to make a more spectacular decoration for your home or office, you can make an openwork voluminous snowflake with your own hands.

Required tools and materials

In order to make a three-dimensional snowflake, we will need:

Manufacturing stages

Preparatory stage. We take sheets of paper and make even squares out of them. For each snowflake you need 6 such paper squares with a side length of 10 to 20 cm (depending on what kind of snowflakes you want to cut out - large or small). By the way, for small snowflakes you can use thin paper. But thin paper is not suitable for large snowflakes - the products will not hold their shape.

Step one. Take one paper square and fold it in half diagonally. You should have a triangle in your hands. We do the same with the remaining five blanks.

Step two. We arm ourselves with a simple pencil and a ruler and begin to draw lines on the triangles. We draw lines parallel to the edges of the triangle, placing them at equal distances from each other. Next, we make cuts along the lines with scissors so that about 3 mm remains to the center of the triangle.

Step three. Actually, half the work is done. There is no need to cut anything else, we will glue it. We unfold the triangle (that is, give it its original square shape) and roll up its central part into a tube, connecting the edges of the cut. We fix the tube along the edge with tape or glue. From experience, I must say that tape holds the edges more tightly.

Step four. After the edges of the tube are securely fixed, we turn the square over so that the glued part is at the bottom, and on the wrong side we bring the edges of the next cut together, making another tube. Again we fix the edges, lubricating them with glue, or gluing a strip of tape.

Similarly, we glue all the cuts on the square. That's it, the first ray of our future three-dimensional snowflake is ready!

We repeat all the manipulations, starting from step three, with the remaining squares and make 5 more rays.

Step five. We connect the tops of the rays with a stapler, 3 pieces each. These will be the top and bottom of the snowflake.

Step six. Using a stapler, carefully fasten the lower and upper parts of the snowflake together.

Step seven. In order for the product to better hold its shape, we fix the adjacent edges of the snowflake with a stapler.

We took white paper, and the snowflake turned out to be the traditional white color.

But you can make a multi-colored snowflake, each ray of which will have its own shade.

An already finished snowflake can be decorated with sparkles, sequins, finely chopped foil, etc.

And finally, I suggest watching several videos on making three-dimensional snowflakes, where the whole process is clearly shown.

Do you also like to decorate your home and office with serpentines and snowflakes? Would you like to see these winter messengers three-dimensional? But how to make a three-dimensional snowflake from a flat piece of paper with your own hands? It turns out it's not difficult.

Huge snowflake on the window

This unique snowflake star shines beautifully when hung in a window, even without any artificial lighting!

Due to the different thicknesses, transparent paper creates a beautiful design that attracts attention.

You will need 16 transparent A4 sheets and some glue. Details in the video:

This beauty looks impressive when assembled from paper of two or three colors.

In order to make a voluminous snowflake with your own hands, you will need:

  • 6 squares of colored or white paper of the same size;
  • scissors;
  • Ruler and pencil;
  • stapler;
  • glue.

Work order

  • Our volumetric snowflake will consist of 6 identical parts. We will make each of them according to a stencil prepared in advance. Draw 6 straight lines on an equilateral triangle non-overlapping lines at right angles to each other and at equal distances. Leave at least 1 cm between cuts.
  • Take a square piece of colored paper and fold it in half diagonally.

  • Make 3 cuts along the stencil. If you decide to make a large six-pointed star for a Christmas tree according to these instructions from sheets of whatman paper in A11 format, you will have to make more cuts. Accordingly, turn, connect and peck too.

  • Unfold the square and fold the corners of the small inner square together. Fasten with glue or a stapler.

  • Turn the sheet over to the other side. Fold the corners of the next inner square and also fasten them together.

  • Turn our craft over again and repeat the steps. In this case, the first smallest folded square will be inside the third square.

  • Turn the piece over one last time and seal the corners of the largest outer square. The result was a voluminous multilayer icicle. This is one sixth of a snowflake.

  • We make 5 more “icicles”. Secure them with staples, three at a time. Bend the tail on which the fastening bracket is located.

  • Attach the two halves into one whole snowflake. Use a stapler and don't skimp on staples.

  • To prevent the snowflake from falling apart into its components, it must be fastened with a stapler at 6 points.

  • You can tie a thread and hang a voluminous snowflake from the ceiling or attach it to the top of the Christmas tree.

Craftsmen don’t stop there; they decorate the product to their own taste. Paints, glitter, artificial snow (or just salt) are used:

Huge snowflake quilling

Using the quilling technique you can also make a beautiful snowflake of impressive size. Yes, the job is for the patient, not everyone can handle it. But in the end you will get something like this:

We do this work from one piece of paper.

Advice: You can quickly make a square out of a rectangle without using a ruler and pencil. Fold the leaf, aligning the top short side with the side long side, starting the fold line from the corner of the leaf. Cut off everything that remains below the two-layer “pie”. Unfold and make sure you get a square.

Making a simple snowflake

  • Take the square and bend it diagonally again.

  • Fold two more times from one corner and cut into a leaf shape. Make two cuts at the same distance from the edge of the “leaf”.

  • Unfold the workpiece. Bend the inner strips to the center and glue.

Snowflake accordion or fan

Prepare two identical strips of paper. Assemble two accordions from them. Fold them in half crosswise and cut out the same contours. This is difficult to do because there are too many layers of paper. Therefore, it is more convenient to use a pre-prepared stencil. By drawing an outline along it on both sides of the accordion at once, you can cut it out without folding it in half. Contour options are shown in the photo.

Staple the centers of our blanks and glue them together using PVA glue. Unfold the fans and glue two more surfaces. You can hang a snowflake on the Christmas tree.

Here's how a snowflake can look in a room's decor:

Openwork snowflake made from strips of paper

A snowflake made of paper strips looks light and elegant, the shape can be different, it will be great if you come up with your own version.

We invite you to make with us a light openwork snowflake from stripes with your own hands.

Cut 15 strips of paper of the same length and width. Fold them first with a cross, and then with a snowflake, 5 pieces in a bunch at the same distance from each other. Coat the middle and let the glue dry so that our structure does not fall apart from the slightest draft.

Take the diagonal outer strips and fold them as shown in the photo, securing them with glue or metal staples. Moreover, they must be attached to the central horizontal or vertical strip. Do the same with the second outermost diagonal stripes.

Repeat the operation, connecting the outer horizontal and vertical strips together and securing them to the central diagonal (left in splendid isolation) strip. The result is a wonderful airy openwork snowflake.

Volumetric composite snowflake

This simple technique provides enormous scope for creativity.

Sequential steps:

  1. we prepare paper snowflakes using the usual paper cutting technique, from 4 or more identical pieces,
  2. bend all the snowflakes in half,
  3. Glue the halves of the snowflakes together.

The principle is well illustrated in the video:

DIY snowflakes are the most affordable and simple New Year’s decoration for your home, school or workplace. You can make them from the most ordinary paper, cutting them out according to ready-made templates and diagrams, which can be found in large quantities on the Internet. Beautiful large snowflakes 2017 made from paper yourself - step by step with photos

You can make a beautiful paper snowflake with your own hands for decoration and in quite large sizes. Such decor will certainly attract everyone's attention and will become an interesting interior solution on the eve of the New Year. Learn how to make a beautiful large snowflake out of paper with your own hands step by step from our next master class.

Necessary materials for a large DIY paper snowflake

  • sheet A4
  • Ruler and pencil
  • clothespins
  • New Year's garland, glitter

Instructions for a step-by-step master class on a large beautiful snowflake with your own hands

  1. First you need to cut thin paper strips in the amount of 20 pieces, 10 strips on each side. The longer they are, the larger the finished craft will be. Then we lay out five strips in a row at small intervals, and lay out five others on top according to the braided principle.
  2. We turn the resulting workpiece so that it lies in front of us in the form of the letter “X”. Now we connect first the adjacent and then the outer strips and glue them. Secure the top with clothespins until completely dry.
  3. Repeat on each side. As a result, there should be one strip on each side, forming a thin cross.
  4. Leave the workpiece to dry completely for about half an hour. Then we remove the clothespins and move on to the second identical part of the craft.
  5. We connect both parts together by rotating the bottom part of the snowflake 45 degrees. Now the free strips can be fixed with the ready-made beams.
  6. We glue them with glue and secure them with clothespins, leaving them to dry completely.
  7. All that remains is to decorate the finished snowflake. This can be done using pieces of New Year's garland and sparkles.

On a note! Instead of glitter from the store, you can use broken Christmas tree decorations. To do this, carefully crush the glass toy wrapped in thick fabric with a rolling pin. The resulting crumbs must be mixed with transparent glue and then used to decorate crafts.

DIY snowflake 2017 from a book for the New Year, step-by-step master class

In the next step-by-step master class we will make snowflakes for the New Year with our own hands from an old book. This is a great way to breathe new life into its yellowed pages. You can’t call a snowflake from a book for the New Year with your own hands (step-by-step master class below) a simple children’s craft. Small children definitely cannot handle it. This is more of a master class for creative adults who do not perceive making New Year's decorations solely as child's play. On the contrary, they are happy to create beautiful and exclusive decorative elements.

Necessary materials for a snowflake from a book for the New Year

    • book sheets
    • glitter
    • ruler and pencil
    • scissors
    • fishing line or thick thread

Instructions for a step-by-step master class on snowflakes from a book for the New Year

    1. First you need to draw book sheets into strips 2 centimeters wide.
    2. For one side you will need 7 such strips: 1 the full length of the page, two 2 centimeters shorter, two more 2 cm shorter than the previous ones, and two strips 6 centimeters shorter than the first.
    3. The longest strip should be folded in half to form a loop, gluing the bottom edges together. On the sides you need to fold the strips shorter, also gluing their lower parts, as in the photo below.
    4. Repeat similar manipulations with the remaining strips and fix them under heavy pressure, for example, a table lamp.
    5. When the workpiece dries, you should additionally secure its edges with thin fishing line. In general, you will need 6-8 such blanks for one snowflake.
    6. Again, cut the book sheet into strips of equal length. Cut and roll into a tight ring, tie with fishing line. The ring can also be additionally coated with transparent glue.
    7. After complete drying, you should proceed to joining the craft. To do this, coat the end of the workpiece tightly with glue and connect it to the ring.

    8. Repeat with each workpiece.
    9. To better fasten the snowflake, coat the outer loops of the adjacent rays of the snowflake with glue.
    10. Small sparkles are suitable as decoration and should be applied to the side edges of the snowflake. You can also use pieces of garland, sequins, and small beads.
    11. Then you need to make a loop from the fishing line so that you can attach the snowflake, for example, to a Christmas tree. Ready!

DIY paper snowflake for children using origami technique, master class

The art of origami is multifaceted and complex, but with the right instructions using this technique you can make a fairly simple craft with your own hands, for example, a children's snowflake. True, to be completely frank, the following master class with photos cannot be called made exclusively using the origami technique. In it, for a child's DIY paper snowflake, in addition to the origami technique, you will also use threads and scissors.

Necessary materials for origami children's snowflakes for the New Year

    • thick colored sheet
    • pencil and ruler
    • needle and thread
    • scissors

Instructions for a master class on children's snowflakes using the origami technique

    1. To begin, we cut out a strip 5-7 cm wide and about 20 cm long. Using a pencil and ruler, we make notes on every centimeter along the length. We cut out an imitation of a “fence” on top, as shown in the photo. In the middle of the resulting columns we draw small diamonds. Then we mark the middle of each centimeter with dots and pierce them with a thin needle.
    2. Now we take a ruler and place it on top of the first line dividing our “fence” section in half. Carefully bend the workpiece inward, and then remove the ruler and bend it in the opposite direction. We repeat the same with each section. The result should be an accordion, as in the photo below.
    3. We hold the accordion tightly with the fingers of one hand and use scissors to cut out the previously marked diamond shapes in the middle of each section.
    4. We take a needle and thread and carefully thread it through the small holes that we already pierced with the needle two steps ago.

On a note! The thread needs to be thick so that it holds the finished structure tightly!

    5. When the thread has already passed through all the points, we reinsert it into the first hole to close the structure.
    6. We remove the needle and begin to gradually tighten the thread until a tight ring is formed. We tie the thread into a knot, and place a spool on top of the snowflake to straighten it.
    7. We form a loop from the remaining thread and our children's snowflake is ready! And for those who want to master the pure origami technique for creating snowflakes, we have selected a video tutorial with a step-by-step diagram below.

Instructions for a master class on openwork snowflakes using quilling techniques

    1. Using a ruler and a simple pencil, you need to draw a sheet. To do this, make 0.5 cm marks along the width of the sheet and draw lines along the entire length. Then we cut out the strips with scissors.
    2. To form the rolls you will need an awl. We wind the strip onto it quite tightly, and then let the roll unravel a little and glue the edge to its base.
    3. The snowflake will be based on one round element and six drop-shaped rolls. To get an element in the form of a drop, you need to lightly squeeze one edge of the round roll with your fingers. We connect the structure with glue.
    4. Now add six eye-shaped rolls to the base. We will also make them from round rolls, but by flattening both edges with our fingers. Glue the “eyes” between the drops according to the template below.
    5. Now we need small rolls, so we fold the standard strip in half and cut it into two parts. From each small strip we twist a small round roll. To begin with, you will need six of these elements.
    6. We glue small rolls along the edges of the elements in the form of a cat's eye.
    7. We roll six standard large rolls.
    8. We glue them to the drop-shaped elements, as shown in the diagram below.
    9. Now we need six square rolls. We will form them from standard round ones, slightly flattening the sides into a square shape.
    10. We glue the squares to the large round elements, having first turned them into the shape of rhombuses.
    11. All that remains is to twist a large round roll according to the standard pattern and glue it to the top of our craft. Let the snowflake dry completely and thread the thread through the large roll. Ready!
