Heart symbol

So, the heart symbol, where did it come from, and how far back does its history go? How many people know this? I think no.

The heart symbol is the most positive emblem of the whole world. It is firmly entrenched in our consciousness as a symbol of love, mercy and goodness. However, people who know human anatomy know that what we consider to be a symbol of the heart has nothing to do with the human heart.

Three versions of the origin of the heart symbol

So where did the heart symbol come from? It is known that he has no homeland in any country, faith or culture. There are many versions of the origin of the heart symbol. One of them, and the most common, is the version that this symbol was suggested to us by nature itself - swans version. Looking at two swans swimming towards each other, or more precisely at their heads and necks, the image of a heart visually emerges. As you know, swans are birds that are distinguished by devotion and faith, they choose a mate for themselves forever, and in the world this is rarely observed among animals, so maybe that’s why the symbol that they create is associated with love and devotion.

There is another interesting version of the origin of the heart symbol. In Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, people personified and were attached to the ivy plant, they were fascinated by its ability to twine around everything nearby. Therefore they depicted an ivy leaf, which, by the way, is very similar in shape to the heart symbol, on tombstones, as a symbol of eternal love. Apparently since then, the meaning of the heart symbol has turned into a symbol of love and affection.

There is also a very interesting version. In ancient India, the symbol of the heart was not originally such. For them it was an image male and female auras. They believed and knew, many years ago, that a person has his own energy aura. Accordingly, when a male aura connects with a female one, that bright and strong feeling arises that we call love!

We all love to decorate our nicknames (names) with symbols: stars, hearts...

When a tired but happy young mother looks out of the window of the maternity hospital with two packages in her arms to show them to her husband, she becomes even happier... Why? Because she sees her husband below with flowers and a giant glowing heart - a symbol of love lined with candles.

This symbol is clear to everyone, in any country, on any continent. Perhaps, in terms of frequency of use, it is second only to the Christian cross.

However, it has long been noticed that the universally recognizable heart, consisting of two adjacent semicircles, connected by one edge, and the other gradually tapering downward to form an acute angle, bears little resemblance to the real human heart from an anatomy textbook. How did we come to the conclusion that with this sign we denote not only our love for a person dear to us, but also the center of the circulatory system on children's medical posters or, for example, heart balm?

Having read quite a lot of articles on the topic, as well as having become familiar with various accompanying legends, your humble servant was able to discover five main versions of the origin of the heart symbol, which seem the most plausible.

Version one – “curly”

It is associated with ivy, which in Ancient Greece was often used to represent the vine that personified the god of wine, Dionysus. Already many thousands of years ago, a symbol similar to was found in Hellenic mosaics, as well as in their pottery and in the form of festive ritual wreaths with which the priests of Dionysus covered their heads.

Despite the fact that the symbol somewhat compromised itself in the V-IV centuries BC, when it began to be used as an emblem of brothels (found, for example, in Pompeii), it also had a positive meaning.

Ivy was also considered a symbol of fidelity and procreation, and was quite often presented to the bride and groom during wedding ceremonies. Widowers and widows also often decorated the tombstones of their deceased spouses with the ivy symbol, as they wanted to be as inseparable from them as ivy twined around the stem of another plant.

Version two – “curly”

It cannot be attributed to any specific author, but it was most clearly formulated by Galdino Pranzarone, a professor of psychology from Virginia (USA), who analyzed various literary, mythological and other sources. In it, the origin of the heart is associated not with the internal (heart), but with the external parts of the human body.

The professor discovered that for ancient civilization, with its cult of the human body, it was very typical to glorify the female figure. Both as a whole and its individual parts. For example, in Syracuse they even built a temple in honor of the goddess Aphrodite Callipyges (literally, Aphrodite the Beautiful Butt).

“A real heart is never such a bright scarlet color, and its shape is not hollow at the top and pointed at the bottom. But this is exactly the outline of a beautiful female butt,” the scientist wrote. Simply put, the inhabitants of the ancient world were inspired by the beauty of the female figure, and the symbol owes its origin to the lines of the body.

Version three – “immoral”

Here it could be without quotation marks. In ancient times, on the northern coast of the Mediterranean Sea in Cyrenaica (modern Libya), the silphium plant from the Umbrella family was widespread. Already by the 3rd-4th centuries after the Nativity of Christ, it is considered to have disappeared due to climate change and predatory harvesting.

Trade in this plant was so profitable that the city of Kyrenia even issued coins depicting open sylphium seeds. Silphium was the only tribute that the conquered Cyrenians paid to Rome.

Why was this plant needed? Silphium was used to prepare seasonings, as an antidote for snake and insect bites, and helped with many diseases: indigestion, cough, sore throat, tachycardia and fever.

But the Roman patricians especially valued it not for this, but for its abortive properties. Silphium seeds were both a kind of currency and a sign of invitation to intimate relationships without obligations. The day after the intimacy happened, the woman used silphium to avoid getting pregnant, and sometimes later to get rid of an unwanted child.

It is believed that the prototype of ours could have been the image of silphium from the coins of Kyrenia.

Version four – “lyrical”

Lyrical, because it is associated with the lyre - an ancient musical instrument, precisely made in the form of an almost correct, but only upside-down.

Some calm melodies were most often played on this instrument; its music was soothing and mesmerizing. Noble citizens invited a musician with a lyre and a singer into the house to sing an ode to the woman they loved.

In addition, this version is associated with the legend of the love of the musician Orpheus and the beautiful Eurydice. When she died, Orpheus descended into the kingdom of the dead and bewitched Charon with his playing on the lyre, and then so amazed Hades and Persephone that they released the human soul from their kingdom for the first and last time.

Version five – “swan”

Finally, the last version that deserves attention says that the symbol is associated with swans. Swan fidelity and beauty have become proverbial. Since ancient times, the swan has been considered the royal bird.

It is well known that once a pair of swans is formed, they remain inseparable until the end of their lives. Such examples are quite rare in the animal kingdom. It is because of this that swans are considered a symbol of family and a happy marriage.

In addition, swans are extremely beautiful creatures. Their curved necks at the moment of the “kiss”, when the birds swim very close to each other, form a semblance of a heart. Therefore, one of the hypotheses about the origin of the love symbol is connected specifically with them.

How the heart symbol became popular

Already at the beginning of the Middle Ages, the symbol of the heart began to be used in iconography to depict the Passion of Christ and the loving heart of the Lord.

Starting from the middle of the 13th century, the symbol began to appear in works of art, no longer depicting ivy leaves, but the human heart and the very feeling of love.

The first known case of such use was found in the French manuscript “Le roman de la poire” - “The Romance of the Pear” (1250), where a lover gives his lady a heart as a symbol of his feelings.

Further, the symbol is used more and more often on the pages of books and in paintings, until finally, in the 19th century, the era of printed materials begins and one enterprising lady from the USA, Esther Howlen, decides to print scarlet “Valentines” in cyclopean editions. It is thanks to the tradition of depicting a heart on postcards that the familiar symbol of love has become completely popular and recognizable.

And now, when TV and the Internet have joined in the popularization of the heart, probably only in the most remote corners of the world will not be able to understand what this symbol means.

Conclusion

What would you like to say finally? By and large, it doesn’t matter how dear to our hearts appeared. The main thing is what meaning we will put into this symbol now, as well as into the concept of “love” itself.

The main thing is how we can show and actualize our love for people close to us and for God, how much we value our relationships with them and with Him. In this sense, actions and constancy speak for us more than any symbols, although a simple manifestation of attention will be pleasant and not superfluous.

P.S. For the discerning reader who wants to read something else about symbols, I can offer an article about the symbols that can be found on cars today.

In order for these beautiful images to appear on the required page, you should copy them and paste them into the right place. To do this you need:

  • press the left mouse button;
  • select the object you like in the catalogue;
  • copy it by first clicking the right mouse button and then the left one;
  • then the letter or icon is transferred to the required page and inserted into the text, last name, first name or status.

With this procedure, you do not need to use a Word document, text editor or Excel spreadsheet. Many people think that they are needed as an intermediate link for editing a future status or nickname. If you do it this way, then a beautiful symbol or sign will turn into a bunch of incomprehensible squares. They are supported only in Opera, Mozilla, Chrome, etc. browsers.

The signs chosen for design can only be read on the Internet and are simply “destroyed” when transferred.

These beautiful icons are free to choose. These can be blanks of capital letters with curls or, on the contrary, written in a drawing font. The choice of such symbols is extremely wide and every woman can choose exactly the one that suits her best.

There is another, more complex way to create beautiful icons. Various key combinations are used for this. For example, hold Alt then 1 and release Alt. The result will be a smiling emoticon. And if Alt+3, you get a heart. You can find entire tables on similar combinations on the Internet.

Colored designs and frame templates for women's texts

For text, you can use different color backgrounds or templates in the form of frames with pictures or photos. Taking advantage of these “privileges” is also very simple. The background color can be set by selecting it in the Themes section or during post creation. As a result, the text will end up on one background or another and will no longer blend in with the general mass of posts with which the Internet is jam-packed.

Such tricks are especially appropriate when congratulating or writing a post about how the owner of the page celebrates a holiday.

For example, the owner of the page writes about how the New Year holidays were spent. If this is done on a white background, then the post will not catch the eye and is unlikely to decorate the page. And if it is a frame with an image of balloons chosen, for example, on Facebook, then the post will play completely differently.

When blogging, you can use not only plain backgrounds, but also frames with images. They can be stylized as recipes, romantic and other poems, or reflect the status of the page owner. For example, the frame has space for ingredients, descriptions of step-by-step preparation, and a picture of a beautifully presented dish. Such a post will be much more attractive and better remembered.

The page will be decorated not only with letters, but also with beautiful frames and colored backgrounds.

Using frames and colored backgrounds, you can decorate not only your own page. You can congratulate friends or girlfriends with such posts or frames. If you want to get an exclusive background or frame, you can use the services of professionals who will complete such an order. The frame may contain a picture you like, a photo of the owner of the page or her child, husband or friend. And the inscription can be done in capital letters.

Using such colored backgrounds or frames is quite easy. After copying the code from a special directory column, text is inserted in a certain place. Some frames or backgrounds can not only be beautifully designed, but also contain music.

Beautiful and stylish design of a page on a social network or blog has become accessible to many. To obtain beautiful or capital letters or backgrounds, frames or signs, you can use special catalogs that are easy to find through a search engine.

Many Internet users are interested in the question of placing various unusual symbols using a computer or laptop keyboard. Eg, how to add to written text emoticons, hearts, smiles, etc., which are quite often found in postcards, posts and statuses of participants in various social networks, as well as in the login itself.

It turns out that making a heart on a computer is not at all difficult; you just need to know which keyboard buttons and in what combination you need to press. This article will talk about exactly this, as well as ways to draw hearts in Odnoklassniki, Facebook and other social networks.

In fact, there are a huge number of printed characters on a computer, and the keyboard cannot accommodate them all. These are notes, card suits, currency signs, hieroglyphs, feminine and masculine signs, etc. Therefore, not only hearts can be easily written in a text editor, blog or website, but also other interesting signs.

To make a heart, you need to use the following on the keyboard key combination “alt” and “3”(numbers must be used from the right side of the keyboard, while the “NumLock” key must be pressed; also, the activity of the keys depends on pressing the “Win” or “Fn” buttons). A heart will appear at the cursor location immediately after the keys are released.

You can do the same to add creativity to your social media status posts.

We work in the text editor Word

When working in the Word program, in addition to the described method, you can use the following tab: “Insert” - “Symbol” - “Other Symbols”, and then select the required character. Of course, the previous combination is much more convenient, and this method is an indispensable assistant in case you have forgotten which number the desired symbol corresponds to, because thanks to this method you can find it manually.

Windows Character Table

You can find a heart - a symbol that is missing on the keyboard - in the table of all symbols. This method also applies to the case when you can select it manually, without using the corresponding keyboard key combination. To do this, you need to follow the following path: “Start” - “All Programs” - “Accessories” - “Service” - “Symbol Table” and familiarize yourself with the presented table. The desired heart will be at the very bottom.

Considering that there are a considerable number of symbols in it, you should use the action, thanks to which you can find the heart faster. For this you need tick, thereby checking the “Advanced Options” line, and then grouping all characters into certain Unicode ranges.

The heart will be located in the "Symbols and Icons" section. You need to click on it and use the “Select” function - it will appear in the input field; after which you need to copy the icon and send it to the clipboard, apply the standard “Paste” function using the “Ctrl+V” keyboard shortcut or the right mouse button, and the heart will appear in the text in the place where the cursor is.

We recommend that you learn how to work with a table, because in recent years the number of characters in it has increased hundreds of times, despite the fact that the set of characters on the keyboard has remained almost unchanged, and many unusual characters today can only be displayed on a computer with the help of special applications and auxiliary procedures. And as you gain experience, in a simple and convenient way, in addition to the desire to find hearts, you can further expand your collection with new intricate and original icons, changing their fonts and colors.

Well, for the lazy! You can make hearts on the keyboard from symbols without copying and encoding by pressing the keys in this combination: “Ctrl+V” and “Clrl+C”.

Saved characters

Those who do not want to waste time searching for symbols in the table and remembering key combinations today have the opportunity to use ready-made symbols offered by Internet users. You can also prepare the necessary signs yourself and save them in a specially created folder, by copy and paste into a text document.

For example:

  • mathematical signs (√∫∂∑∏ ± - x ÷ ≈ ∝ ≠≤≥ ∈ ∩ ∪⊂⊃⊆⊇ ∧∨∃∀ ←→↓↔ ′″∞ ‰ ∇∛∜∅);
  • symbols of snowflakes and flowers (✽✾❀❁❃❅❆❈❉❋✱✲✶✷✸✹✻✼);
  • asterisks (✪★☆✬✭✮✰ ⋆);
  • signs of planets (☉♁☿♄♅♇);
  • numbers (➀➁➂➆➇⑫⑬⑭⑮ ⑳ ➍ⅪⅫ);
  • hearts (ღ ❥ ❦☜♡☞).

It is worth noting that many laptops do not have some number pads, and the top row with numbers, as was written earlier, does not take any part in creating the heart symbol on the keyboard.

And if there is no keyboard on the right, you need to take a closer look at the letters: D, L, O, Ш and Ш. On the buttons with these letters you can see small numbers. They function in exactly the same way as the small number pad on a computer. It turns on when you simultaneously press two keys: “Fn” and “NumLock”.

When you press them, it will be as easy to print a heart as on a computer. For example, you need to press "Alt" and "D" keys(more precisely, the button with the number three on it).

So, in order to print a heart, you can use the following simple methods:

  • by simultaneously pressing the “Alt” + “3” keys, using the number from the small keyboard on the right, checking that it is active, or if there is no small keyboard on the laptop, use the button with the letter “D” instead of the three;
  • copy the heart or its code on the Internet and paste it into the text;
  • find the heart sign in the table and also insert it into the desired place (line, middle of a word) of the text document.
