Which can hide any skin imperfections and highlight advantages, both on the face and body, with the help of decorative cosmetics. There are 3 main types of work as a makeup artist. Skin care specialist - makeup artist-esthetician. A specialist who creates a “face image”, it is this specialist who can highlight your “winning” facial features, for example, tell you how to properly apply makeup on the eyes - a makeup artist-stylist. A specialist who selects a specific type of cosmetics and skin care cream for a client is a makeup artist-cosmetologist.

A professional makeup artist is obliged to: understand the psychology of color and the psychology of interpersonal communication, as well as the laws of composition; separate types of makeup (daytime, evening, wedding, competition make-up). Understand the technique of applying all types of decorative cosmetics, master the technique of applying makeup, as it changes a person not only externally, but also internally.

A stylist is a professional who creates, using various means, a specific image (image) for a person. There are 4 “types” of stylists. Creates an image using various hairstyles - a hair stylist. A stylist-makeup artist creates an image by applying individual makeup. Creates an image using a certain type of clothing - a stylist-image maker. The photo image is created by a stylist-photographer. At the moment, the profession of “stylist” is quite prestigious and in demand in the beauty, film and television industries.

A stylist must always know exactly all the world's famous brands and be aware of exhibitions and shows. He must have a sensitive nature and be able to provide services to his clients, taking into account the latest fashion trends. He develops an image that will highlight all the advantages and hide all the shortcomings of the client (hairstyles, clothes, makeup). His responsibilities include: choosing colors and clothing, taking into account the external characteristics of the client, developing a new image for a company or organization (clothing for staff), analyzing both domestic and Western fashion trends. When creating, she pays special attention to the specifics of the client’s work, his lifestyle, characteristic features, as well as his comfort zone in clothing.

The profession of “makeup artist” and the profession of “stylist” overlap in the types of work related to makeup, but in other areas they are quite different, so they should not be confused. Representatives of these professions must have an approach to any client, know the psychology of communication and follow all the latest fashion trends. Some famous stylists and makeup artists become true friends for their clients.

Today, stylist, image designer, image maker are extremely popular professions. But what exactly these specialists do is not always understood even by those who are directly related to fashion.

At one of my seminars on image design technology, I asked the audience the question: “Are there stylists in the room?” Only a few people dared to raise their hands, although the audience numbered more than a hundred. And when I repeated the question in a different wording: “Are there hairdressers, makeup artists and tailors in the hall?” - 90 percent answered affirmatively, that is, almost everyone present except journalists.

This example is the best illustration of the most persistent myth in the post-Soviet space: supposedly a stylist is a representative of the highest caste of the fashion world, and ordinary craftsmen are no match for him. Well, how can one not recall the phrase uttered by Lesha Chizhov, the hero of Maxim Galkin, in the New Year’s musical “Chasing Two Hares”: “I’m not a hairdresser, but a stylist! I don't cut hair - I create an image! I create a general style and image, so to speak” Alas, many beauty salon specialists subscribe to these words, without really thinking about the meaning of the fashionable terms “stylist” and “image”. To understand their true meaning, let's remember history.

Captivated by delusions

The word “stylist” was born in the field of literature. It comes from the Greek stylos (writing stick) and originally meant a person skilled in the art of literary style. The word then moves into the arts and crafts realm and becomes synonymous with the term “interior designer.” In the fashion world, it became popular in the 1960s - this is how young fashion designers preferred to be called, contrasting themselves with the conservative couturiers of the older generation.

The term hair stylist has also become widespread in the international language of fashion. Its literal translation into Russian is “hair stylist” or “hairdresser-stylist”. In the early 1990s, this term, which had long been familiar in the West, finally penetrated the fashionable lexicon of hairdressers in the countries of the former Soviet Union. Yes, it was the former Soviet hairdressers who were the first to dare to call themselves stylists, while tailors and make-up artists used “old-fashioned” terminology for a long time.

And then something strange began! For some inexplicable reason, the word “stylist” in the post-Soviet countries is surrounded by an aura of excessive pathos and becomes synonymous with a luxury specialist. “Stylist schools” are popping up like mushrooms after rain, which actually offer a basic hairdressing course, but for “very extra money.” Newly-minted stylists consider themselves to be among the fashion elite, and when asked how they differ from ordinary hairdressers, they mutter something incomprehensible about a “special vision of the image.” Multi-page articles in newspapers and magazines discuss the same topic and come to the same conclusion: “Stylists don’t just cut and comb hair, but create a general style and image, so to speak”

Fifteen years have passed since then. But, alas, the myth turned out to be tenacious. So who is a stylist really?

Stylists: classification of types

But no matter what specialization we are talking about, the essence of the word “stylist” is unchanged - it is the name of a profession, and not at all an honorary title awarded for special merits. Becoming a stylist does not mean reaching the highest level of skill, creativity or imaginative thinking. Every hairdresser, makeup artist, clothing designer or shopper has the right to be called a stylist! And if the master is mediocre, uncreative and old-fashioned, then this does not stop him from being a stylist. It just means he's a bad stylist.

Image-conscious

At the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, the concept of “image” actively penetrated into the fashion lexicon. We borrowed this word, translated from English as “image,” from theater and literature, making it the most popular term in modern fashion. “You have a stylish image!” - we say today, wanting to give someone a compliment.

But this is not just a fashion for a beautiful phrase: by the beginning of the 21st century, the fashion industry had risen to the level of an image approach to the creation of fashion products. After all, the image, unlike the style, is unique. It includes not only clothes, hairstyle and makeup, but also the person himself - his appearance, gait, voice and behavior, his social status and attitude to life. The complexity and variety of problems in creating a stylish image have led to the emergence of a new profession. We are talking about a specialist who creates an image taking into account all its components.

But the problem is that in the early 90s there was no name for this new profession! And another confusion of words began. At first, such specialists were called stylists by inertia. But it has become an even greater misconception to call them image makers.

In fact, the profession of image maker, which appeared a long time ago, has nothing to do with either fashion or the beauty industry. An image maker is a specialist in the field of social psychology and public relations who develops the image of political leaders, public organizations and commercial structures. Using PR technologies, he creates an information image of a leader and implants it in the collective consciousness with the help of the media. But to visualize their projects, image makers resort to the help of stylists. That is, in simple words: image makers develop a political image of a leader or party, and then hire stylists to select a suit and hairstyle that matches this image.

Profession - creating an image

So what do you call a specialist who creates images that are not related to politics? Only towards the end of the 1990s a suitable term was formed - “image designer”. The main task of an image designer is to design an associative image, that is, to create an image idea. And to implement it, he attracts a whole team of other professionals - hairdressers, makeup artists, designers, photographers, acting as a creative leader for them.

To become an image designer, in addition to basic education in the field of hairdressing, makeup and costume composition, it is necessary to study the basics of image psychology, acquire associative design skills, and master professional image design technologies in various specific areas.

However, today every stylist working in the field of fashion (hairdresser, makeup artist, tailor, boutique salesperson) needs to master the theory and practice of image design. Working on only one element of the image, the stylist must understand and take into account the entire system as a whole, he must be able to formulate and offer to the client idea . Aimless trial and error is unacceptable.

A stylist is a specialist in the field of creating a person’s style and image. He does this using all available methods: hairstyle, makeup, clothes, etc. The profession of a stylist is to create an image. Despite the seemingly modern trend of creating images, this work has its roots far in the past. The profession appeared along with fashion. Its very first legislators were queens in Ancient Greece. They changed their hairstyles, and all their subjects imitated their style. Prominent representatives of the stylistic difference were the Indian tribes, in which the leader stood out among his compatriots with a special headdress. Style and stylistics have long been developed as a matter of course. They were part of fashion and were considered its integral components. They began to separate with the advent of the art of cinema. Public people always needed to look good, but not everyone succeeded, so personal assistants and subsequently stylists appeared. In modern times, the concept of a stylist already has clear outlines. This is a personal assistant who creates the client’s image from the tips of his hair to his fingertips.

Description

Nowadays, the profession of a stylist is very developed. It includes a huge range of responsibilities. There are so many of them that a division of image makers into spheres of influence has appeared:

This is a master of style who knows exactly what will suit you and decorate your appearance. He can transform any person with his hairstyle. All this plays an important role, because the hairstyle should complement, and not spoil.
  • Stylist-makeup artist. This specialist knows exactly how a girl should wear makeup. He will teach you how to create suitable images. Select skin care. This is a real makeup guru. He knows how to choose everything from the color of the glitter to the shadows on the eyes. What type of make-up should be used and in what cases, and which should be avoided? A makeup stylist will teach you how to emphasize your strengths and hide your flaws.
  • Stylist-image maker. This is a specialist in the field of fashionable clothing. He knows exactly what cut suits this or that type of figure. Knowing your body shape is not enough. It is important to navigate color schemes and the latest fashion trends. Such an image maker knows the entire range of knowledge and information about the trends of the new season. With it, clothes will only be dyed, and your wardrobe will be perfect. You will always have something to wear.
  • Photographer-stylist. This is a specialist for temporary reincarnation. He creates an image for photo shoots. Thanks to such a master, you will receive a whole series of bright and extraordinary photographs.

Most often, all these areas are combined into one specialist - a universal stylist. It is he who creates an image that will be fashionable and individual.

Communication skills always help to find mutual understanding.

Another important aspect is the appearance of the image maker. He is one of those specialists who are greeted by their clothes and general image. Therefore, accuracy and the ability to take care of oneself play a special role.

Demand

Despite the fact that the profession of a stylist has existed for many centuries, it has only just begun to gain popularity. Appearance has long been the hallmark of most professions, which is why more and more people are hiring stylists on a temporary or permanent basis. Stylists work in television, stage, and the film industry. You can find a stylist in almost every beauty salon. Personal stylists and shopping consultants are rapidly gaining popularity.

How much do people working in this profession earn?

A stylist's income level depends on the number of clients. In most cases, earnings range between 20 and 60 thousand rubles per month.

These are quite substantial amounts, which directly depend on the number of clients and their feedback on the level of work. After all, stylists generally receive a percentage, not a rate.

Is it easy to get a job?

In order to get a job as a stylist, you must pass an interview. The easiest way to get to a beauty salon. You will receive an average income and the opportunity to gain experience. Very often, stylists get jobs as hairdressers or makeup artists, because these arts are included in the range of their responsibilities. After gaining experience and creating a portfolio, you can try to get on television. Private stylists who are attached to wealthy or famous members of society earn especially well.

How does one usually build a career?

Career is developing dynamically. She usually starts as a hair stylist or makeup artist. You gain experience and build a portfolio. Then you should try your luck in competitions - this gives you the opportunity to grow and get a job as a stylist in popular television shows and projects. You can also make great money by working as a personal stylist.

Prospects for the profession

Stylists have two main prospects:

  • The opportunity to receive substantial fees on television, cinema or stage.
  • Opening your own salon or style school.

Stylist is a promising and dynamically developing industry in which anyone can achieve success.

I've been working as a personal stylist for about four years. I have an artistic education, the first is design, the second is art history (fashion historian). Then I just did something all the time, agreed to any shoots, came up with them myself, helped friends, built a portfolio. Over time, clients began to find me themselves.

The profession is generally quite young, and few people in Russia take it seriously. If you really want to become a stylist, you have money and you have nothing to do, you can go to study at some school, they will definitely teach you something. For example, distinguish the color of deer antlers from the color of pig intestines. The best thing, of course, is to get a job as an assistant to a professional stylist, gain experience and connections from him, and go ahead. But this is a story for Moscow or even another country. In this area, St. Petersburg and Moscow are like heaven and earth. There is only one glossy magazine in St. Petersburg, and it’s high time to rename it “Are you serious?”

Client psychology

A stylist must be a good psychologist and create a flair of success around himself. His clients need this. That's why there are so many gay stylists - they know how to talk, praise, and be such sweet suckers. What more do women need? Attention and compliments - and they agree to any rubbish in roses and rhinestones. But this is a matter of professional ethics - I always say what I think, but, of course, I try not to be too harsh. This is why my clients love me. At first they are scared and offended, but when they see the result, when they are given compliments and promoted at work, they run to me again.

Responsibilities

Classic services on any website of personal stylists are “Consulting on individual style and image”, “Revision and formation of a wardrobe”, “Shopping support”. I don’t have many clients, but they all “sit” very closely with me, so the first point turns into the work of a personal psychologist. That is, 24 hours a day at any time they can call me, write on social networks, send me an SMS with some photos of themselves and questions: “What to wear with this cardigan and what with these shoes?”, “Do I look fat?” in that?" and so on. And you have to be as nice as possible to them and always answer their questions. But in the classic version and for ordinary people, a stylist is a one-time story. You tell a person what type of figure he has, what colors suit him, how to correct his figure with clothes, what is possible and what is not. Usually this happens in parallel with the second point - a wardrobe audit.

Revision is a very labor-intensive process. You need to shake out your entire closet and decide what to throw away and what to keep. But wardrobes are different: some have one hanger, while others have a room of several tens of square meters. In such cases, it begins to seem to me that I work as a cleaner “with taste.” Then he still needs to be convinced to throw it away or simply stop wearing certain things. This is always a separate story, because “this thing is very dear to me, I bought it in Milan, Paris, New York, TsUM for such and such a lot of money.” Here we have to explain that the thing looks like something from Aprashka and hugs all the folds of fat. The audit may take up to six hours a day. My back hurts terribly afterwards.

The next stage is the formation of a wardrobe. People who hire personal stylists are usually very busy: they don’t have time to dress up. But they need to look good every day. I do the following: I come to their house (usually when no one is there), climb into the closet, choose sets for them for every day and take pictures of them. Complete look: from shoes and tights to accessories. Then the client, drinking coffee in the morning, chooses a photo he likes, finds these things in the closet, and fashionably goes to work. In 4-6 hours I make 20-40 bows. An hour of my work at home costs 2,000 rubles.

Joint shopping

After sorting out our wardrobe, we go to the shops to buy the missing items. I try to save my clients’ time: I usually go in advance, choose everything, and put it in the VIP fitting room, if there is one. The client comes, tries on, pays and goes home. If I come across a client with a lower income, then I go to the mass market, remember it, put it aside, but choose no more than three stores. As a rule, this is enough. Such a trip costs from three to ten thousand rubles. There are also kickbacks that stylists receive from stores. Not everyone works this way, but many who have wealthy clients do. In addition to your fee, you can receive 5-10% of the purchase amount from the store. Typically, stylists offer themselves to stores, but if the client looks very respectable, then they may offer you cooperation.

Types

Even in my small practice there were very different clients. There are ordinary young girls who need to be adjusted quite a bit - a couple of meetings are enough for us. There are whole families. First, as a rule, wives apply. Then they are no longer satisfied with how their husbands look. There are aunties who have everything in order with style, but really don’t have time to deal with their wardrobe. There are FIFA, which are the hardest thing to deal with. It is almost impossible to help them, because for them a personal stylist is a manifestation of status. As a personal driver, cook or servant. That is, I simply shouldn’t change anything in her rhinestone-leopard world, just say that everything suits her wildly and she’s the coolest, thinnest and most beautiful. But I do my best to infuse rationality into their style, bit by bit.

Men also apply. Quality is very important to them: no matter what their level of income, they are literally shaking over these labels with ingredients. Local celebrities contact us, often before filming. This is hard work, but here you work for a name and are ready to wait and forgive a lot. Celebrities are important and dissatisfied, filming is always on the knee, everyone is late, nothing works, then they forgot, it doesn’t exist. The promised three hours turns into seven. And you need to return the clothes to the store as new. And this is not always possible. But when you see the result of the shooting, you can evaluate your mistakes and grow further. And often after shooting in one magazine, other publications begin to apply.

The relationship with most clients is close, but it’s different here. As one client says: “Sorry, but it’s not customary to share stylists. I won’t give you to anyone.” Someone needs to call her at one in the morning with idiotic questions about her appearance.

I often see discussions about stylists online. Some are dissatisfied with their counseling experience. Someone didn't like a particular article. Someone is surprised by the strange shots from the photo shoot and asks the canonical question: “Who will wear this?” I am already silent about the fact that there are no criteria by which today one or another specialist can confidently define himself as a stylist.

There are different courses and schools. But they do not have a certification standard (and, in my opinion, they cannot have one in such a subjective area). There are simply practitioners who do not have a specialized education, but nevertheless they are quite authoritative in their field. In general, how to deal with all this? First, let's figure out what types of stylists there are and what they do.

Hairdresser-stylist

Popular

The first and most common are hairdressers-stylists. How does such a specialist differ from an ordinary hairdresser? Firstly, he knows how to do more than just do what the client showed in the picture in the magazine. And he not only knows the technique of cutting and styling, but knows how to choose the length, shape and color that suits the client most. From my point of view, when there are all these articles or programs about “transformation,” this part is the most difficult in most cases. Although, perhaps, for a person who constantly faces such tasks, this is quite a routine.
The most professional hair stylists work at fashion shows. For example, I was once struck by an interesting solution with ponytails on rings, which Guido Palau implemented at the Dior show. And masters of this level also become official stylists of brands that produce hair products, and they come up with different coloring and styling techniques. And in general, they create collections of current hairstyles that ordinary hairdressers in salons can use as guidelines in their work (especially in hairdressing chains).

Costume designer

There are also specialists at the “stylist/costume designer” level. Such people work in cinema, theater and on the set of music videos. Here, I personally would distinguish between those who work with historical films, those who dress the heroes “as they are today,” and those who work with futuristic films. In any case, this specialization requires extensive knowledge of fashion history. And quite often - the ability to work with a limited budget: how to extract the maximum amount of material from a minimum of possibilities. We can separately talk about the masters who translate these ideas into reality. And they are trying to recreate, for example, hand stitches and embroidery of the Middle Ages. Overall, I think this is a very interesting job. It’s not for nothing that they give a separate Oscar for work on costumes!

Production stylist

A production stylist is a person who works on photo shoots. Often the task of this specialist is not only to select clothes, but also to negotiate with brands and stores that provide these clothes. Then all this needs to be brought directly to the location or to the editorial office, and during shooting it is necessary to ensure not only how to put everything in a good frame, but also to ensure that the clothes do not get dirty or damaged. And after the shooting, everything must be carefully collected and delivered back to the store or showroom. In large publications, stylists have assistants who do the rough work, but in small magazines with a small budget, the stylist himself has to run around the city looking for the right blouse for the shoot.

An important nuance of the specifics of such a stylist’s work is that he creates a certain static picture in the frame, which should convey the mood and visual image. It is clear that in life no one will dive into a pool in a dress with sequins or wander through snags in the forest in sandals with thin straps. Therefore, most of the photographs created with the help of a production stylist can be used by us as sources of inspiration in terms of the nature of the image or, for example, color scheme, but are unlikely to be suitable as a model for copying in real life.

Commercial stylist

I would unite in this group all those specialists who try to present clothes in the most attractive way for potential or actual buyers. In fact, the people who dress mannequins in stores and the people who style large lookbooks are doing the same job, just at a different level. By the way, in some large chain stores, images for mannequins are not invented on the spot - they are dressed in accordance with the general stylistic brand book, which is sent to all brand stores in different parts of the world.

Show stylist

Such a stylist has a difficult task. On the one hand, a creative approach is important - all appearances at the show must correspond to a certain idea, convey character and the so-called “brand DNA”. On the other hand, it is necessary that everything presented pleases the buyers who are making purchasing plans for the next season. A fashion show is a commercial show: sometimes in reality things don’t look exactly the way they are worn and combined on the show. And some units do not appear on the runway at all, although they are included in lookbooks and end up selling well.

Stylist for the occasion

Separately, I want to talk about the stylists who dress people. And about the problems they solve. For example, stylists sometimes work on a situational request. Let's say you have an important interview coming up, you've been invited to a reception at the embassy, or you're getting ready to moderate an important scientific conference. In everyday life you dress in jeans and T-shirts, but on the right day you need to look the part. You turn to a stylist, and he creates a look for you for one specific occasion, as they say, “turnkey”: from start to finish, from hairstyle to the right underwear for a cocktail dress.

Stylist-shopper

He can help you while shopping. Such a specialist will not only help you choose the right trousers or coat, but will also tell you where you can buy them at the most profitable price. There are two payment options for such work. The first is hourly payment, and everything is clear here, the second option is a percentage of the total amount spent. And here I don’t entirely agree, because a lot of shopping does not always mean successful shopping. Moreover, I once had a client with whom we did not buy or plan anything at all. The girl came from abroad to visit her parents. Buying things in Kyiv would be significantly more expensive. But we went to all the stores and tried on a lot of things, finding silhouettes and combinations with accessories that were good for her. And of course, the most correct option (which, alas, cannot always be implemented in practice) is when a shopping trip is preceded by the analysis and analysis of an existing wardrobe.

Stylist-theorist

These people are usually approached when planning to completely change their wardrobe and personal style. Why do I call such specialists theoreticians, although they deal with quite practical things? Because their main goal is not only to select a wardrobe, but also to convey to the client maximum theoretical knowledge that he could use in the future. Learn to work with style information. And in general, teach independent analysis and selection. Yes, very often such specialists limit their own work to theory: they write articles, conduct lectures and webinars. But they don’t work with specific clients. But this does not mean that their advice is not worthy of attention: in any case, working on style is, first of all, your independent work, and the stylist here is only an assistant and teacher. And no one will ever do everything for you, because every day you will still be faced with the question “What to wear?”, and there will be new situations in your life, the decisions of which you will have to make on your own. And in the same way, you need to evaluate the stylist’s advice for yourself (it doesn’t matter whether he advises you personally or it’s an article in a magazine or blog) and think , Are you interested in this topic?
